Last evening’s rain was that sort, and it was the perfect moment for me to go out to the garden, trimming the sweet peas before their spent blossoms became the seed pods for next year’s garden awakening. I like to keep this year’s flowers blooming for as long as possible, hence the almost daily trimming. Time enough to leave them be when fall comes round again; I can let them do their resurrection prep work then. Even weeding is pleasurable in this kind of weather, especially when digging bare-handed into rich, soggy earth, pulling out greedy, weedy invaders by their roots. That greed that can push out longtime neighbors is not welcome in my garden. There’s room enough for a little of everyone I like to think.
Today’s rain has been heavier, with some downpours, but mostly just strong, steady showers. I know because I was out in that too, early this morning, first in the garden, checking on my plant friends — they’re not drowning, (although the seeds I planted a few days ago have surely floated away); they’re actually loving the cool wet, especially after the past weekend’s scorching heat, plus we’ve been in a drought for years now where I live. After the garden visit, I ventured down the street, dodging cars and puddles (forget the raindrops — I was outnumbered), and went to my friend’s to pick up my library book, before heading next door to my dad’s for a quick visit. Sweet, simple joys I’ve experienced in my ‘hood so far this week.

When it’s a warm season, I’ve always loved being outside during a rainfall, ever since I was a small child. It’s been raining here since early yesterday morning, the day’s delicate misty sprays shifting in alternate rhythm to the soft pattering of steady drizzles.
